Rosary Boxes - Ideas??

So, some of you may remember back when I made the Stations of the Cross Box for Caroline. In the same place where I got this idea, I saw mentioned the idea of making Rosary Boxes as well, but no detailed suggestions on how to do so. What they would consist of is a box for each of the four sets of Mysteries of the Rosary (or maybe one big box to sort through; I haven't decided yet). There are five cards for each set of Mysteries, which I plan to laminate. I want to pair an object with each card, something meaningful to symbolize each Mystery.

Here is what i have come up with so far:

Joyful Mysteries:
1st Joyful Mystery - The Annunciation (angel figurine)
2nd Joyful Mystery - The Visitation (???)
3rd Joyful Mystery - The Nativity (small manger, toy barn animal, star?)
4th Joyful Mystery - The Presentation (two small bird figurines for the turtledoves)
5th Joyful Mystery - The Finding in the Temple (???)

Luminous Mysteries:
1st Luminous Mystery: Baptism of Jesus (small seashell)
2nd Luminous Mystery: Wedding at Cana (wine glass wedding favor)
3rd Luminous Mystery: Transfiguration (???)
4th Luminous Mystery: Proclamation of the Kingdom (???)
5th Luminous Mystery: Institution of the Eucharist (host made of white cardboard, maybe fake grapes?)

Sorrowful Mysteries:
1st Sorrowful Mystery: Agony in the Garden (fake flowers?)
2nd Sorrowful Mystery: Scourging at the Pillar (small whip-like item?)
3rd Sorrowful Mystery: Crowning with Thorns (thorny branch from a rose bush)
4th Sorrowful Mystery: Carrying of the Cross (cross made of craft sticks)
5th Sorrowful Mystery: Jesus Dies on the Cross (a nail, maybe?)

Glorious Mysteries:
1st Glorious Mystery: Resurrection (a stone - rolled away from the tomb?)
2nd Glorious Mystery: Ascension (cotton balls - for clouds?)
3rd Glorious Mystery: Descent of the Holy Spirit (dove figurine)
4th Glorious Mystery: Assumption of Mary (???)
5th Glorious Mystery: Coronation of Mary (a little crown)

I would love to hear any ideas anyone might have for the symbols to include! Some of them have me stumped! Any suggestions?

Daybook for Tuesday, June 1

Outside my window... the beginning of our patio. The patio guys plowed up the dirt and them promptly disappeared on Friday. They showed up unannounced this afternoon (scared me to death when one of them walked right past the window of the laundry room when I was putting stuff in the dryer!!) and built the form. Hopefully they will pour the concrete tomorrow.

I am thinking... that maybe there is a reason that Caroline coughs a lot every night as soon as she lays down. I keep thinking allergies... Claritin hasn't helped so far this season. I hate coughing while I am trying to sleep - not much more miserable than that, I think.

I am wondering... why we didn't get Netflix sooner. It is only $8.99 a month, and we never watch TV, only movies... so we don't have cable or a dish or anything, so Netflix makes sense. Now we can watch all the old episodes of The Office and get caught up to whatever season they are on now. And Netflix has all the episodes of The State, an old comedy show that came on MTV when I was in high school (back when MTV started to play random non-music shows).

I am praying... for a good summer that will lead into a good start to homeschooling.

I am thankful... for my parents for having us over on Memorial Day for a cookout. We got to see two of my three brothers, too, and we got to at least see the dog of the brother who we didn't see, ha ha. And we got to see our niece Julianne, who is getting so big... probably 15 pounds already at 2 months old!

I am hearing... the new Tonic album. It was my autographed prize that I mentioned before, and it came in the mail about two weeks ago. Chris says he likes the solo album better that I was listening to constantly before this one arrived. I am alternating between the two now.

Learning at home... topics include What Squirrels Do to a Garden, How to Check Birds' Nests in the Fig Tree for Eggs, and Swimming. And Caroline is printing letters a lot, reading some small words on her own, and creating lots of interesting artistic items... today was a fishing pole made of a craft stick, yarn, and a bead, with a paper fish she made attached to the end.

From the kitchen... interesting diet food. We had breakfast burritos in corn tortillas for dinner tonight - mine were made with all egg whites. But I got to eat four of them!! Lots of mono unsaturated fatty acids for me. But everything has been very yummy so far... oatmeal with bananas and pecans sprinkled with nutmeg and cinnamon - mmm! And I will be making myself my fourth meal of the day, a chocolate raspberry smoothie, in just a bit! Yes, this is really a diet, although I bet it doesn't sound like it!

I am reading... the recipes from the Flat Belly Diet book, and blogs... making time for watching the old episodes of The Office with the hubby, so not as much reading now.

To live the liturgical year... We changed out our May decor and put out the June saint holy cards. Yesterday was the feast of the Visitation, when Mary went to her cousin Elizabeth's house and stayed for three months, we presume to help her in the last trimester of her pregnancy. I thought that a great way to celebrate this day would be to help out a friend or relative who is pregnant or has a new baby... and we have two pretty new babies in our extended family right now. Rather than going and helping them out, Caroline and I baked banana bread to mail to them. We had taken banana bread to my brother's family when their baby was first born, and Dutch (the aforementioned ownerless dog) ate it. And he is allergic to everything, so not only did he eat their food, but they had to deal with him reacting to it. He lives with my parents now... poor transient dog. Seeing as his owner doesn't come back until October, he could even end up here... I don't know if my parents' rats (I mean cats) can take five months of him in their house... Mason may just take up permanent residence in her hidey hole in the ceiling!

One of my favorite things... relaxing. I think I like it too much, ha ha.

I am creating... June Circle Time plans... not much else. Not feeling too creative lately; I've been in a bit of a rut.

Around the house... laundry. Had to pull it all off the line when we heard very loud, sudden thunder, and then of course the actual rain missed us. Oh well. I washed coats and sweaters too, since it's pretty safe to say that we are done with them for a while.

A few plans for the rest of the week... swimming laps at the indoor pool for me on Tuesday and Thursday evening, post office tomorrow, possibly hanging out with friends so the kids can play together, a friend is coming over to buy eggs and let her son play with the girls (and chickens, maybe!), and I want to go here on Saturday afternoon/evening - trying to convince Chris that it would be fun!! It is free, and we can stay at my parents' house overnight afterwards. Bonus points to anyone who can guess why I want to go... Chris and Tim are not eligible to guess since they know.

A picture thought I am sharing...

Kids Say the Darndest Things

We went to a local lake to swim on Thursday morning. We have to pay $3 for a parking permit there (it is going up to $5 in June - waah). As we drove out of the parking lot to go home, Caroline asked, "Mommy, do we have to pay to unpark?"

And Cecilia calls sunscreen "scrunscreen" - so cute!

***************************************************************************
And this is totally unrelated, but I just realized how very old our car is... I was 17 years old when it was made!!! And I am almost 31 now!!! I can't believe I was actually only 22 when we bought it... wow, I almost can't believe I was ever 22 years old at all. Seems surreal...

Did you know...

...that when you throw a cup of skim milk, half of an 8 ounce can of pineapples, and a handful of ice into the blender, that it looks like THIS? Where does the froth come from?? I was so surprised that it looked like this that I had to plop the glass down, right there on my desk where I keep my camera, and take a photo! What an unexpected treat on the first strict four days of the Flat Belly Diet! So far, it has not been too hard, and on day five, I can begin eating somewhat normally again. I will update periodically as I go... maybe my Cecilia pregnancy weight (or at least the belly!) will get under a bit better control. ;)

And tonight, I get to have a peach smoothie! By Friday, I can have chocolate chips on my oatmeal or in some yogurt - whoohoo!

Celebrating Pentecost

Pentecost is considered to be the "birthday of the Church," since that is when the Holy Spirit descended and the apostles began to go out and spread the word. So it is considered to be a pretty important day, and we celebrated like we did last year! Caroline helped me to make this descending dove Pentecost spinner again... we made it during the week before Pentecost Sunday.

For part of our dinner, we had a twelve fruit salad, representing the 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit. Here's where I got the idea, although we just had the fruit, no dressing on it. I thought I had a kiwi, and I forgot about the can of pineapple in the pantry... so I was two fruits short. I ended up throwing in some raisins and dried cranberries to get to 12, ha ha!

Here are our cupcakes, like we had last year. There are 13 of them - representing the 12 apostles and Mary (which is why there is a blue cupcake at the top). Each one has a candle so that when lit, it depicts the tongues of fire that came to rest above each of their heads.

We hung up our doves again this year... if you care to see each ornament up close, you can click on the link to last year above this photo. The girls and I also colored some Pentecost pictures which we hung on the china cabinet. Caroline cut hers out and glued it to red paper. She later colored a dove picture just like Cecilia did... after Pentecost. You can see in this photo that our priest is in his red vestments.

Here are the cupcakes, complete with "tongues of fire!"

Cecilia was excited to be able to help this year by being part of the "mighty wind" along with Caroline!

Mmm... cupcakes! (Er, wheat germ muffins with frosting on top! I love that we can find ways to celebrate things and still eat in a somewhat healthy way!)

Caroline wanted to eat the blue one this year...

And in the background of this picture, you can see the cool old radio we inherited and the chair that could really use a slipcover!

We also finished up our Garden of the Good Shepherd sticker calendar... fifty days went by very quickly, according to Caroline! She couldn't believe we'd gone through fifty stickers already! Next year, I hope to do more of the Good Shepherd Garden Parties... we had lots of fun with the one that we did do this time!

And now, back to Ordinary Time!

A Trip to the Birmingham Zoo

For those of you who know us, you may be wondering, "Why did they go to the Birmingham Zoo? Don't they live in Georgia, closer to Zoo Atlanta??" Chris was going to Birmingham for the day on Saturday to shoot some videos for apologist John Martignoni (Catholics may recognize his name). So we tagged along on the two hour trip to visit the zoo while they worked.

Our first stop was the petting zoo area. Goats and sheep for petting and brushing.

Cecilia loved the goats...

...very much. She does this to our chickens, too.

Inside a barn by the petting zoo were more animals, including these baby turkeys.

Rats! When telling Daddy about the zoo, the girls told him, "There were some rats in a wall." That is exactly what they were... a panel on one of the barn's stall walls opened, and one of the zoo workers dumped the rats into it! The other side was covered in some plexiglass type material so we could see the rats.

Two bald eagles! I don't think I have been this close to an eagle before... they are HUGE birds!

Being nocturnal, this owl was sleeping - right there in the open - and the girls are banging on the fencepost and yelling to try to wake him up. He must be a pretty laid-back fellow - he blinked once and continued to sleep...

Random old truck next to a vulture enclosure...

The otters were very cool... I loved getting some silhouette photos!

There were chickens near the petting zoo, and we noticed one rooster was outside of the coop... not sure if that was intentional or not. Later, we noticed a rooster and a hen wandering around in the "food court" area... very random. People were feeding them french fries, sadly.

This tiger came to the inside viewing area just as we approached the window. Perfect timing! Then it went back to the outside part of the enclosure. Now, maybe I'm spoiled because of being used to Zoo Atlanta, but this zoo has a "predator house." They have a bunch of wild cats... in indoor cages. Some have absolutely no outdoor access, like the bobcats. I thought that was really sad. There was also a primate house, where the smaller monkeys - and even the orangutans - lived in indoor rooms. There is construction being done on a large part of the land there, though, where they are making some kind of African exhibit... and there is plenty of land there for them to make bigger outdoor habitats. Hopefully that is what they will be doing. They are getting some elephants once that is completed, too.

Giraffes...

And rhinos. last time I took Caroline to a zoo, she said, "Rhino-nosserus picked me out!" She was a bit younger than Cecilia is now when she said that... we never figured out what exactly she meant by saying that it "picked her out." Maybe it looked at her? These ones didn't pick her out - they were sleeping. Caroline asked, "Are they real?"

This might have been the coolest exhibit in the place... the lorikeets. These bright-colored birds were hopping and flying all over the place, with no fear at all of humans! You could feed them a little cup of nectar, and they would come right up and eat it as you held it out to them, and we even saw some of them sitting on people's arms to eat! One landed on Caroline's head briefly, ha ha!

Caroline feeds one...

...and Cecilia takes her turn.

Cecilia, of course, reached out to pet them. They moved away from her slightly and pecked at her, but she didn't mind!

I'd never seen anything like this, where you can just walk in among the birds and they will come right up to you. Very neat!

We watched a sea lion training show. The sea lions would hop up on ramps, jump in the water, lay down, and leap out of the water to touch a ball on a stick (and were rewarded with fish each time, of course!). They did all this by watching the zookeepers motion with their hands!

Caroline spotted a peacock and was excited that we had seen this animal on our Garden of the Good Shepherd Easter calendar earlier that week! Also on our calendar, we'd seen...

... a pelican! Pelicans are much bigger up close than you would think! And they are kind of mean, too, so I am not sure why we were allowed to get this close to them! O course, I told the girls the story of Uncle Stephen catching a pelican with his fishing pole...

We rode the little train that goes around the zoo... just $2 each, so I figured, why not? The admission to this zoo is so much cheaper than I am used to from Zoo Atlanta!

Last stop was this kids' area, where they had fountains to splash in and a big inflatable thing filled with bubbles (foam, they called it in the brochure).

Caroline stayed in the foam the whole time until I told her to come out and splash in the fountains a few minutes to rinse off, since Daddy had arrived to meet us in the parking lot!

Caroline said that the kids in the foam asked her where her bathing suit was... we had a change of clothes in the car instead!

As much as Caroline wanted Cecilia to come in the bubbles with her, I wasn't about to let her go in where she would be completely engulfed and possibly trampled by bigger kids who couldn't see her! She didn't want to go in either, and so she enjoyed the fountains.

Here's Caroline being surprised by a fountain as it starts spraying. She rinsed all the foam away quickly!

A fun little daytrip! And of course, on the two hour ride back home, neither child fell asleep... Cecilia had almost fallen asleep on my back in the zoo, but apparently the monkeys were just a bit too interesting for her to let go completely! After such a full day in the sun, most kids would crash on the car ride home... ahh, am I destined to only have children who don't fall asleep in the car?? They were in a great mood though, so I am not complaining... only wondering!

Summer time has officially started when the outdoor water-related trips begin - yay!! We'll have to do the lake and our own local fountains downtown sometime soon now!
